Entomology Collections at Kendal Museum
Entomology is the scientific study of insects; over one million species of insects have been identified in the world and experts believe there are many more species yet to be discovered.
Next time you visit Kendal Museum look out for some of the smaller creatures on display, you will find insects from around the world, including butterflies, moths, iridescent jewel beetles, a praying mantis, scorpions, impressive rhinoceros beetles and a goliath beetle one of the largest insects on the planet.
The first President of Kendal Literary & Scientific Society, the founders of the museum, was an eminent entomologist. His collections are held at the museum.
The butterfly collection is extremely important as it contains specimens of every known British butterfly, including all extinct species.
